This fall, you might have seen a set of advertisements that eBay ran that all ended with the “Come to think of it – eBay” tagline. When you looked at them through a green lens, many of the ads spoke to the idea that the greenest product is the one that already exists. Here's why:

Okay, so you're one of the growing number of highly evolved and incredibly enlightened people that want to shop sustainably this holiday season. But let's face it. It's not always that easy to do. It's tough enough to find that perfect gift for dad or cousin Mary, but add to that trying to figure out what something is made out of and where it comes from, and you've got the makings of a fine holiday migraine.
Thankfully, there are lots of green gift guides out there that can help. From eBay's to Treehugger's to CNET's or The Daily Green's, green gift guides are great resources to figure out where to start your holiday shopping odysseys.

- Ashwin Seshagiri
At eBay, we've known for a while that buying used online is much better for the environment than driving to the mall or a big box store and getting something new off the shelf. Earlier in December, a couple of research firms released a study comparing the environmental impacts of Black Friday, which most people consider to be the biggest shopping day of the year, with Cyber Monday, a day that has become popular over the past few years to do holiday shopping online. Among other things, the study found that buying something on Black Friday, on average, was 50 times worse for the environment than buying something online on Cyber Monday.

When Gary Shienfield started knetgolf, he wasn't trying to create a business that was good for the environment. He and his teenage son, Shaun, started going around to golf courses in their hometown of Ontario, Canada, gathering and selling used—or what they call "experienced"—golf balls because it seemed like a waste of perfectly usable balls. Billions of balls get lost on golf courses every year, and they saw a business opportunity.

There's nothing wrong with needing a little liquid refreshment after a day filled with any combination of diapers, tantrums, playdates, school pick up and drop off, PTA meetings, laundry, food fights, and more. I really did lay off the sauce for the entire (long) period of time I breastfed my daughter so my first few cocktails back were quite an experience. I'm more of a wine girl, even half a glass at about 5:59 p.m. can really make or break the dinner to bath to bed transition. But come summer, hand me a dark and stormy, a gin and tonic, or a margarita with actual lime juice and I'll be your best friend forever.
