Earlier this year, we swapped out trash cans for recycling and compost bins at all of our employees' desks in San Jose. Here are answers to a few of the more commonly-asked questions that have come up about what can and can't be composted.

Last week, the eBay Salt Lake City Green Team had the chance to celebrate Earth Fest, the city's one and only Earth Day festival. The 6-hour event was filled with food, drinks, music and an eBay-sponsored "green" carpet where people showed off their green resolutions for the year.

Colin Beavan, the man otherwise known as No Impact Man, came to eBay to talk about his family’s year-long attempt to live in New York City without making any net impact on the environment.

eBay's Green Team Is Recognized as Example of Innovative Employee Engagement

The second annual Social Innovation Awards were held this evening in New York City. The event - which recognizes corporations and nonprofits for implementing groundbreaking business strategies and programs - is organized by JustMeans, an organization that bridges the worlds of social media and corporate responsibility, and the Financial Times, one of the world’s leading business publications.

Last Fall, we sponsored the Big Green Idea contest, a company-wide call to employees for suggestions on how to make eBay a greener place to work. From a list of more than 600 ideas, eBay’s CEO John Donahoe and employees chose which ones the company will investigate and implement in the coming year.

Every year, eBay hosts an event at its headquarters that celebrates the innovative people that work here. In its sixth year, the innovation demo expo encourages employees to come up with new ideas for tools and applications that will make the eBay experience as best as it can be. Last year, one of the more memorable technologies that came out of this event was eBay's mobile app, which in large part helped the company earn the recognition as the 2009 mobile retailer of the year.
There were over 80 teams presenting this year, most of which came from employees who came up with ideas in their spare time and worked in small teams with colleagues to create demos. Among projects on how to better list items to using Twitter trends to display products, there were a few green standouts as well.

This morning, we unveiled a new, state-of-the-art technology at our PayPal campus in San Jose that will provide us with environmentally-friendly and inexpensive power from an innovative new fuel cell technology.

The State of Green Business: Greener Lifestyles Are Trade-ups, Not Trade-offs

Last week, several hundred business and non-profit executives gathered in Chicago to reflect on the "state of green business.” As more and more companies seek to offer environmentally friendly products, it’s also clear shoppers are getting more and more confused. Within the eBay Green Team community, we think about green shopping a bit differently. While consumers continue to care about the health of the planet, we also realize they have to balance that with other concerns, like tightening pocketbooks.

On February 1, the group that oversees our facilities in San Jose is rolling out a new “Zero Waste for Green Space” program, which could help us divert as much as 95% of our trash from going to a landfill.

Salt Lake City eBay Employees Ring in the New Year By Paying It Forward

Inspired by the same sentiment as breathing new life into old things, eBay employees in Salt Lake City, UT teamed up with Eve, a city-wide New Year's Eve celebration to welcome the coming year. Unofficially dubbed "eBay It Forward," the point was to celebrate those special, everyday things that can have such a big impact on our lives.
